Celebrating community while promoting horticulture
Our story
-
The garden
Spring Glen is a walkable suburban neighborhood in Hamden, CT with approximately 2,989 residents. The boundaries include Skiff Street (North), Hartford Turnpike (East), Waite Street (South) and Lake Whitney/ Mill River (West). Inspired by the community garden walks that happen throughout the country (the oldest, since 1959, takes place in the Chicago neighborhood of Sheffield).

The gardeners
Founder Judith Clark thought this would be the perfect Master Gardener project, as there are many enthusiastic gardeners in Spring Glen. The first Garden Walk took place in 2024 and was promoted mostly on a neighborhood social media page. Nineteen gardeners participated.
In 2025, we received a generous grant from the CT Master Gardeners Association (CMGA). Thank you to the CT Master Gardener volunteers who visited the gardens. Special thanks to the many members of the Garden Club of New Haven, Garden Club of America, and Federated Garden Clubs that also showed their support. We had over 30 gardeners hosting their gardens this year. Some hosts reported that they have over 30 visitors to their garden.

Cultivating
Community-to connect with fellow gardeners and to celebrate the positive things happening in our neighborhood.
Horticulture-by relishing the aesthetic beauty of gardening. No garden is too small or insignificant and all are welcome to participate.
Experiential learning-by the sharing of gardens, gardening techniques and practices.

Self-sowing
